My father is Death… like duh

This week, my friend’s newest baby Death’s Daughter comes out of the womb, and I’m so excited for her. It was two Christmases ago that we were in a coffee shop and she excitedly scooted her laptop towards me so I could get a brief glimpse at the world she was building in that cozy West Hollywood coffee shop.

I applaud her and look forward to gobbling the entire book up over the next few days.

As a congratulations, I made a little card to say “Hey man, your first solo book is out! Sick!” and wanted to share the process of creating it for you, dear reader.

First comes the layout stage. I had a couple sketches, and of course the tiny one at the bottom of the notebook page I did as an afterthought (and totally inspired by a Hiti sketch) is the one her boyfriend tells me works the best.

I didn’t get a chance to take a picture of the pencils, so let’s just say that happened quickly and I was super chilled out and I inked it like nothing… the blacks came later so I wouldn’t get a milky hue when the water colors went on.

A pretty easy part of the process. I enjoyed creating texture for the wings. Still a controlled wash, but I’m getting more comfortable in that medium.

And then add the blacks! As you can see, I added the scythe from the sketch, and went crazy with rendering the wings

Finally, some fixing-up on Photoshop. I opted for what I usually opt for when having a shadow-heavy piece: More is more. The ghoulie in the back lost some detail, the wing over Callie got raised, and then the figures were slapped on a background (which I tell you was no easy job finding the best color).

Ta-da!

Please pick up Death’s Daughter when you can. It should be the keenest bit of Urban Fantasy you’ll read in ‘09 ;)
