That is one of 10 pages that I got to illustrate for Karen Yamashita’s genius novel, I Hotel, which should be in stores now. The book, as much as I can abbreviate a 600 page piece of awesome, is about Asian American diaspora in the 60s told through moments of a hotel in San Francisco.
Pretty deep.
Karen was one of my mentors/ advisers in college, and when she asked me if I would draw for her, I was incredibly honored, and super intimidated. Even though the comic portion (Chiquita Banana) is three pages, she sent me a brick of reference to pore over. I have so much respect for her process, and do not recommend it for the lazy.
And, for your pleasure, a preview of some other drawings in their pencil form (10 points if you know who they are!!!)
