It takes a village to make a movie poster

A few years ago, I was at a fun and swanky Halloween party in the Hollywood hills. Nothing too fancy, it was mainly a bunch of production artists wearing ruffled shirts and calling themselves Austin Powers. One gentleman told me about the trials and tribulations of making a movie poster. He had done promo stuff for one of the Hulk movies, some John Travolta movie that escapes me, and so on. It was an eye opening conversation. I never knew that they just photoshopped actors’ heads onto models, or that the studio would ask for literally hundreds of changes, or that there was an actual equation to making a comedy poster (two leads, white background, title in chunky red or black text).

People still don’t believe me when I point out that Julia Roberts’ body on the Pretty Woman poster is that of an actual prostitute.

You have at the very top of this blog entry the movie poster for Drones, a film directed by my friends Adam and Amber, written by my friends Ben and Ben, music’d by my friends in common rotation, set decorated by my friend Lea Anna… it’s a family affair. So was making this poster. It took the combined skills of my colorist S. Struble, my lovely co-designer Sydney and myself to bring this all together, with A+A steering us the whole way through. It’s a charming and lovely film that will be premiered at Slamdance next weekend, and I hope the poster reflects that.
