Tell me we’re rockers to swallow
Ever since I was in high school, I wanted to be in a rock band. Like every boy, I just wanted to be rowdy on stage, jump around with a white guitar, and have other people make me look good as I would climb the troubadour’s scaffolding like a monkey (Timothy Rabbit knows what I am alluding to). But it took a stern talking-to from my friend Andrew to help me realize that I am not Alex Greenwald.
Tell me we’re knockers to bite
In high school, I wrote a song about my lifelong pal, Amir. Eric played the guitar. I was trying too hard to channel Karen O and Paul Banks, but it was the only way I could sound almost good. I still find the song listenable… more so than “Mommy” or “3AM Moving On,” or “Pillows.”
And out of the beats of tomorrow
Did everyone else spend their afternoons in high school making music and short films with friends?
Tell me what beat fills the night
At this point, when I spend time with a guitar and Garageband, the result is a shitty cover to put on a mix, or to make Mini Mike laugh. There’s still that part of me that wishes I could do it– write an actual song (or seven) that I could perform live, at The Troubadour. However, when your friends are Common Rotation, Finest Dearest, Timothy Rabbit, The Myonics, and Grand Lake, it’s kind of hard to take your feeble musical endeavors seriously.
For now, I’ll remain that dumb-ass in a dorm room with a guitar, playing Rilo Kiley as best as I can.
(you figured out the pics are links to songs, right?)
