McQ

Last week, we lost The Greatest. Alexander McQueen, a fashion designer, hung himself in London. He was 40, and no one was ready to see him go.
For the past few days, I have been trying to find something to say or share publicly about the tragedy. Instead, I let you speak. The first day, I wouldn’t allow myself to feel bad, because I thought no one would understand why I grieved over a stranger who made expensive clothes. All weekend, I got text messages, e-mail, phone calls, and facebook messages from my friends expressing their condolences. It became clear to me that no one saw my regard for McQueen’s designs as consumptive or predicated on labels and brand-names, but rather based entirely on appreciation for the imagination, skill, and focus of an artist. I am indebted to my friends for noticing that distinction.
Against the prudent advice of some well-intentioned folks, I am not going to draw some sort of salute/ tribute to Lee McQueen. If you look at photos of me at any event, or the outfits my characters wear, or if you even ask why the hell I work in fashion retail for the Day Job, you will see my tribute to him.
